Why the image of a kaleidoscope?
Collaboration is the ability to see the pieces and the whole.
Shifting perspectives, seeing the forest for the trees and the trees for the forest, taking the long view and the short view, understanding and accepting that the most minute adjustments change the entire picture – all of these skills are encapsulated in the kaleidoscope.
The glass shards in a kaleidoscope are not right or wrong, they are simply different from each other. As I turn a kalidescope, I create a design that speaks to me. Collaboration means creating a design that speaks to all. The willingness to keep turning, keep talking, keep listening until the picture falls into place is the heart of the collaborative process. A picture (solution) is not arrived at through force. it is created by joint effort.
A collaborative divorce requires real work – the process is not for the faint of heart. Choosing a collaborative divorce process is not layering touchy/feely language on top of business as usual.
Turning a jumbled stack of broken glass into a unified design
is the work of a kaleidoscope.
Turning the pieces of a marriage that is ending into a design for the future
is the work of Collaborative Divorce.
